Stable homes and self-esteem: Parenting during or after divorce ...

Assuming the rewards and responsibilities of being a parent is no easy task. It is common to feel like one misstep in your parenting approach could affect your children's emotional wellbeing for years. Often, it is even more stressful and easy to second guess your parenting style while going through or recovering from a divorce.

However, it is important to remember that when parents allow their stress, insecurity or guilt to get the best of them, their actions can do their children more harm than good. Working through these feelings is critical to maintaining confidence in your parenting approach.

As you are working though any of these emotions, following a few straightforward tips will hopefully help you continue to parent with your head held high. Writer Cristina Pesoli recently offered a few suggestions on this subject in an article from the Huffington Post. The most critical of these suggestions is to "Make your house a home."

Children crave stability and security. Divorce can wreak havoc on their senses of both of these necessities. Allowing your house to nurture feelings of stability and security can only benefit your kids. It is likely that before or during your divorce, the family home was a place of stress at times. Now, making that space peaceful, safe and loving can help your children adjust to all the change in their lives.

In addition, Pesoli advocates that parents both continue to treat their children as children rather than friends and "root for your ex to be a good parent." However, just starting with cultivating a safe, secure and loving home will do wonders for your children and wonders for you as a newly single parent.
