Carlyle buying DuPont coatings business for $4.9B

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) ? The Carlyle Group says it is buying DuPont's performance coatings business for $4.9 billion in cash, giving it another investment in the automotive and industrial segments.

The private equity firm will also take on $250 million of DuPont's unfunded pension liabilities.

The performance coatings business of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. caters to the automotive and industrial coatings sectors. The business is expected to have 2012 sales of more than $4 billion. It has more than 11,000 workers.

Carlyle's investments in the automotive and industrial segments already include Allison Transmission, PQ Corp. and Hertz.

DuPont Chair and CEO Ellen Kullman said in a statement Thursday that the transaction is consistent with its long-term strategy of "driving competitive advantages in agriculture and nutrition, advanced materials and biotechnology, which represent high-growth, high-margin opportunities."

DuPont says it is still committed to serving the automotive industry.

"We will continue to work closely with automotive customers to apply our science-powered innovations related to light weighting of vehicles, revolutionary and environmentally friendly refrigerants, biobased seat fabrics and headliners, and next-generation biofuels," Kullman said.

On Wednesday Swiss seed company Syngenta said that it will pay $125 million for DuPont Professional Products' insecticide business, which supplies products for the professional turf, ornamentals and home pest control markets.

The deal with the Carlyle Group is targeted to close in 2013's first quarter. Carlyle says the DuPont transaction will be funded with equity from U.S. buyout fund Carlyle Partners V and Carlyle Europe Partners III.

DuPont's stock added 77 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $50.71 in premarket trading Thursday.

Exercise can Help Cancer Patients, but Few Oncologists Suggest It: MAYO Study

"As doctors, we often tell patients that exercise is important, but to this point, nobody had studied what patients know about exercise, how they feel about it and what tends to get in the way," says lead author Andrea Cheville, M.D., of Mayo Clinic's Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The study is part of a series of investigations looking at exercise habits among cancer patients. Researchers found that patients who exercised regularly before their diagnosis were more likely to exercise than those who had not. Many patients considered daily activities, such as gardening, sufficient exercise.

"There was a real sense of 'What I do every day, that's my exercise,'" says Dr. Cheville, noting that most patients didn't realize daily activities tend to require minimal effort. "Most were not aware that inactivity can contribute to weakening of the body and greater vulnerability to problems, including symptoms of cancer."

In addition, researchers found that patients took exercise advice most seriously when it came directly from their oncologists, but none of those studied had discussed it with them.

"Generally, patients are not being given concrete advice about exercise to help them maintain functionality and to improve their outcomes," Dr. Cheville says.

Exercise can improve patients' mobility, enable them to enjoy activities and keep them from becoming isolated in their homes. It can contribute to overall feelings of strength and physical safety, ease cancer-related fatigue and improve sleep. The researchers plan to investigate how to make the message about exercise meaningful to patients to optimize symptom relief and enhance recovery.

My decision to build muscles started when I glanced through a fitness magazine. The women in the magazine were well built and looked very healthy. I decided to go for their look and went on the internet for more information. After an intensive research, I started by a setting goal and making changes with my diet and nutritional practices. I realized working out at home, as I have been doing, would not give me the preferred results I wanted.

I registered with a gym and had a personal trainer. He gave me a training program and nutrition guidelines for six months so that we can measure my progress at the end of the period. My favorite was defintely all the bacon and eggs for breakfast. It was very stressful for me during the first week as my body was adjusting to the new routine. I was training three times in a week and had to make changes in my daily routine to incorporate this new lifestyle. My main difficulty was adjusting to my diet routine. My diet included vegetables and fruits and lean protein.

I became so conscious about what I put into my body and took time to read the nutritional facts on packages before buying them. Another important element I learnt was to stay hydrated all the time so I drank a lot of water during the day. I replaced all drinks, including sport drinks, with filtered water. I was also discouraged from trying to find the best supplement for muscle growth. After the six months I was happy with my body and look. I had lost weight including the belly fat. I was well toned and looked very healthy. Not only was it visible in looks but I felt healthy and happy.

I became the envy of my friends and even encouraged most of them to start training. There started asking me about the best bicep workouts for mass. I was however scared of having the big bulky muscle look. I discussed with my trainer and we eventually agreed on a training program that will help me to maintain my look without any massive build up. I love my look and I think it?s the best decision I have made concerning my healthy. Chelsea Davids

Buying a property with a regulated tenancy - READERS QUESTION

I am considering buying a property with a regulated tenancy. It is occupied by one person who is getting on in age. As I understand it once the tenant is no longer living there, either by going into residential care or moving or passing away, the property becomes mine to do with as I wish. Is there anyway that some one not presently living there can claim to take over the tenancy, such as a relative or friend who moves in to care for the elderly person or just another family member.

Also if I purchase the property in the name of one of my children does this create problems with HMRC?

Isaac crossing Gulf with New Orleans in crosshairs

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac targeted a broad swath of the Gulf Coast on Monday and had New Orleans in its crosshairs, bearing down just ahead of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The potential for a landfall as soon as Tuesday prompted evacuations along a wide area of the Gulf Coast and sent people out to stock up on staples.

"I gassed up ? truck and generator", John Corll, 59, a carpenter, said as he left a New Orleans coffee shop Monday morning. He went through Katrina in 2005 and was expecting a weaker storm this time, adding that he thinks the levee system is in better shape to handle a storm surge than when Katrina hit. "I think the state and local governments are much better prepared for the storm surge and emergencies," Corll said.

Isaac blew past the Florida Keys and was rolling northwestward over the open Gulf of Mexico on Monday. The National Hurricane Center predicted it would grow to a Category 1 hurricane over the warm water and possibly hit late Tuesday somewhere along a roughly 300-mile stretch from the bayous southwest of New Orleans to the Florida Panhandle.

That would be one day shy of seven years after Katrina struck catastrophically in 2005, although Katrina was a much stronger Category 5 storm with winds over 157 miles per hour. Isaac is expected to have top winds of around 90 mph when it hits land.

The size of the warning area and the storm's wide bands of rain and wind prompted emergency declarations in four states, and hurricane-tested residents were boarding up homes, sticking up on food and water or getting ready to evacuate.

On the Alabama coast, Billy Cannon, 72, was preparing to evacuate with several cars packed with family and four Chihuahuas from a home on a peninsula in Gulf Shores. Canon, who has lived on the coast for 30 years, said he thinks the order to evacuate Monday was premature.

"If it comes in, it's just going to be a big rain storm. I think they overreacted but I understand where they're coming from. It's safety," he said.

The storm that left eight dead in Haiti blew past the Florida Keys with little damage and promised a drenching but little more for Tampa, where the planned Monday start of the Republican National Convention was pushed back a day in case Isaac passed closer to the bayside city.

Isaac could pack a watery double punch for the Gulf Coast. If it hits during high tide, Isaac could push floodwaters as deep as 12 feet onto shore in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and up to six feet in the Florida Panhandle, while dumping up to 18 inches of rain over the region, the National Weather Service warned.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency, and 53,000 residents of St. Charles Parish near New Orleans were told to leave ahead of the storm. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, Florida Gov. Rick Scott and Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley also declared states of emergency.

The oncoming storm stopped work on rigs that account for 24 percent of daily oil production in the U.S. potion of the Gulf of Mexico and eight percent of daily natural gas production there, the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said in its latest update Sunday.

The Gulf of Mexico accounts for 23 percent of total U.S. crude oil production, 7 percent of the nation's natural gas and more than 40 percent of refining capacity.

Several regional governors altered their plans for this week's GOP convention in Tampa. Bentley has canceled his trip, and Jindal said he's likely to do so unless the threat from the storm subsides. Scott gave up a chance to speak.

Amtrak cancelled train service in Louisiana for Tuesday and Wednesday. The route than runs from New York to New Orleans would end in Atlanta, while its route from Los Angeles to New Orleans would stop in San Antonio. Amtrak was also suspending part of its rail line between Miami and Orlando, Fla.

Grocery and home improvement stores as well as fuel stations in Louisiana reported brisk business as residents sought to prepare for Isaac. Some gas stations were running out of supplies.

Before reaching Florida, Isaac was blamed for eight deaths in Haiti and two more in the Dominican Republic, and downed trees and power lines in Cuba.

Call for Papers:?The Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Technoethics (IJT) would like to invite you to submit a manuscript for the next submission deadline: November 1, 2012. The following describes the mission, coverage, and guidelines for submission to IJT.

Mission
The mission of the International Journal of Technoethics (IJT) is to evolve technological relationships of humans with a focus on ethical implications for human life, social norms and values, education, work, politics, law, and ecological impact. This journal provides cutting-edge analysis of technological innovations, research, developments policies, theories, and methodologies related to ethical aspects of technology in society. IJT publishes empirical research, theoretical studies, innovative methodologies, practical applications, case studies, and book reviews. Gunmen kill policeman in restive Nigerian city: residents

A group of armed men killed a policeman on Sunday in the tense northeastern Nigerian city of Damaturu, which has been hit by several attacks carried out by Islamists in recent months, residents said.

"A group of gunmen opened fire on a policeman as he was walking home after closing from work this afternoon," resident Buba Kolo told AFP.

"They made away with his rifle and bullet-proof vest. The shooting caused a stampede in nearby market as traders hurriedly closed their shops and fled the area," he said.

Another resident Zakari Sheu gave a similar account of the incident in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, which has been a hotbed of deadly insurgency by the Islamist group Boko Haram in recent months.

"I fled the area when I saw the body of the policeman lying on the ground soaked in blood. His rifle was missing, so was his bullet-proof jacket," he said.

Police in Damaturu confirmed the attack, but could not give details.

"There were shootings along Potiskum road near the main market around 4:30 pm. Details are still sketchy. Am awaiting a comprehensive report from the divisional police officer in charge of the area," state police spokesman Toyin Gbadegesin told AFP.

Boko Haram, which is seeking to create an Islamic state in the north, has killed more than 1,400 people since 2010 in attacks across northern and central Nigeria.

The insurgency by the group has grown increasingly sophisticated in recent months with security agents, including the police, state institutions and Christians being targetted.

Grizzly Bear Kills Hiker In National Park | Demete

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? A hiker in Alaska?s Denali National Park photographed a grizzly bear for at least eight minutes before the bear mauled and killed him in the first fatal attack in the park?s history, officials said Saturday.

Investigators have recovered the camera and looked at the photographs, which show the bear grazing and not acting aggressively before the attack, Denali Park Superintendent Paul Anderson said.

The hiker was backpacking alone along the Toklat River on Friday afternoon when he came within 50 yards of the bear, far closer than the quarter-mile of separation required by park rules, officials said.

?They show the bear grazing in the willows, not acting aggressive in any form or manner during that period of time,? Anderson said.

Investigators have identified the man but won?t release his name until they?ve notified his family. They said he?s a U.S. citizen but declined to release any other information about him. Rangers were hoping to recover his remains later Saturday after ensuring the scene was safe. Several other bears have been seen in the area.

Officials learned of the attack after hikers stumbled upon an abandoned backpack along the river about three miles from a rest area on Friday afternoon. The hikers also spotted torn clothing and blood. They immediately hiked back and alerted staff park.

Rangers in a helicopter spotted a large male grizzly bear sitting on the hiker?s remains, which they called a ?food cache? in the underbrush about 100 to 150 yards from the site of the attack on Friday. A state trooper shot and killed the bear on Saturday, and investigators will examine its stomach contents and use other tests to confirm it?s the animal that killed the hiker.

There?s no indication that the man?s death was the result of anything other than a bear attack, investigators said, adding that it?s the first known fatal mauling in the park?s nearly century-long history.

?Over the years, and especially since the 1970s, the park has worked very diligently to minimize the conflict between humans and wildlife in the park,? Anderson said. ?We have some of the most stringent human-wildlife conflict regulations in the National Park system, and I think those are largely responsible for the fact that there hasn?t been a fatal attack.?

Park officials said they don?t believe other registered backpackers are in the immediate area. That portion of the park is closed but other wilderness areas remain open, officials said.

Prior to receiving a permit to hike in the area, all backpackers in the park receive mandatory bear awareness training that teaches them to stay at least a quarter-mile away from bears, and to slowly back away if they find themselves any closer. Investigators confirmed that the hiker had received that training.

Denali is located 240 miles north of Anchorage. It spans more than 6 million acres and is home to numerous wild animals, including bears, wolves, caribou and moose.

Law enforcement source says 2 US gov't employees wounded in shooting near Mexico City

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican Navy says federal police shot at a vehicle carrying two U.S. government employees after the vehicle came under attack from unidentified gunmen.

The shooting appears to have been a case of a confused gunbattle that broke out on a rural road just south of Mexico City.

The Navy said Friday the embassy personnel were heading down a dirt road to a military installation when a carload of gunmen opened fire on them and chased them, along with a Navy officer accompanying them.

Alerted to the gunfire, a federal police patrol vehicle came to the scene and apparently opened fire. The statement does not make clear whose bullets injured the U.S. workers.

Regardless of the situation, it's relatively safe to say Samsung will never, ever run out of Galaxy monikers. Now it's the Korean outfit's Galaxy Stellar making the internet rounds yet again, though there's a little more information attached this time around. Per Droid Life, Sammy's purported Verizon-bound Galaxy Stellar will be joining the carrier's LTE-equipped smartphone lineup with a $100 price tag (of course, that's assuming you sign a two-year deal) and is, as you can see above, said to be carrying an "easy-to-use" Starter mode to help folks get started, plus a compact design that "fits comfortably in hands." Most notably, however, are the tidbits flaunting Amazon apps rather than, say, the Android maker's Play offerings -- an interesting plug, to say the least. At this point nothing's quite set in stone, so we'll have to wait for more details to spill before making any assumptions.

Gonzalez: 'Excited to back to Cali'

Adrian Gonzalez posts on his Twitter account that he's headed from the Boston Red Sox to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The slugging first baseman is part of a blockbuster, nine-player deal being worked out between the Red Sox and Dodgers.

The Los Angeles Times reports the trade has been completed, and the official MLB page re-tweeted the post by Gonzalez.

The Dodgers would receive Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett, outfielder Carl Crawford and utility infielder Nick Punto.

The rebuilding Red Sox cleared about $260 million in contracts off their roster and will receive first baseman James Loney and four prospects.

Gonzalez, who was dealt from San Diego to Boston after the 2010 season, tweeted: "Excited to get back to Cali and be a part of Dodgertown!"

Bordentown college student earns internship at Holocaust museum

As she wiped tears away, Caitlin Moynihan had to know: How could people do this to their fellow men, women and children?

The degradation, dehumanization and flat-out crimes against humanity didn?t make sense.

?It was almost unbelievable that anyone could do this to other people. I was crying when I saw it,? Moynihan said of her reaction to a documentary on the Holocaust that she viewed during a class at Bordentown Regional High School several years ago.

The film disturbed her on many levels. It showed the brutality of millions of Jews being killed during World War II and also demonstrated that, decades later, the subject seems to have faded away into the history books.

?There?s so much more that the people should know about it,? Moynihan said. ?It?s such a horrible thing that we should not forget about.?

Several years after that high school class, Moynihan will get a chance to further educate the public about that horrific chapter and tell some of the survivors' stories at a New York City museum.

The 21-year-old Ramapo College senior has been selected to participate in the prestigious Lipper Internship Program at the Museum of Jewish Heritage ? A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in Manhattan this fall.

?I kind of freaked out when they called to say I had been selected,? Moynihan said. ?I was extremely elated. I couldn?t wait to start.?

She is one of 15 interns who will learn how to teach Jewish history and the Holocaust to young people.

?We do it to educate the public school students about the Holocaust and the implications of the Holocaust in the modern world,? museum educator Loren Filber said. ?We hope everyone walks away with a deeper understanding of the subject.?

Since the Lipper program started in 1998, interns have worked with more than 50,000 students from the Northeast.

Moynihan, who is pursuing a degree in history with minors in genocide and human rights along with Judaic studies, began training earlier this month.

As part of her training, she studied the museum?s exhibitions, heard testimony from Holocaust survivors, and attended seminars led by scholars.

She even met three Holocaust survivors and one from the genocide in Rwanda in the mid-1990s.

?When you hear it from a survivor, you gain a lot more compassion,? she said.

In the coming weeks, Moynihan and the other interns will share what they?ve learned with schoolchildren throughout the region.

After introductory sessions, the interns bring groups of middle and high school students to the museum, where lessons are complemented by tours of the museum?s core exhibition. They return to the schools at a later date to discuss the material and encourage the students to share their reactions and insights.

Moynihan said she?s been forewarned that there will be tough questions.

?I heard someone asked, ?Why would God let this happen?? ? she said. ?How do you answer that??

Moynihan said she doesn?t know if she?ll ever have a good answer to that question, but she'll do her best.

?We as a generation are lucky enough to be able to speak to the survivors of the Holocaust,? she said. ?We have a responsibility to pass on their knowledge. If we forfeit that responsibility, these individuals? stories will be lost forever.?

Atsuko Maeda's AKB48 Graduation Parade Cancelled

Parade around Akihabara theater nixed after Olympic parade drew 500,000 in Tokyo

The AKB48 idol group announced on Thursday that the parade that was to be held just before Monday's "graduation" of departing member Atsuko Maeda has been cancelled.

AKB48'S staff explained that the August 20 parade for Japan's London Olympic medalists attracted 500,000 people to Tokyo's Ginza district ? more than the authorities had predicted. The police anticipated a similar crowd forming for Maeda's graduation parade, so AKB48 decided to cancel the parade in light of public safety concerns.

The parade would have been held around AKB48's theater in Tokyo's Akihabara district on 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Later that day, Maeda will perform for the final time in AKB48 before 250 people. However, a record 229,096 people requested tickets ? 916.38 times more requests than available seats.

As a result, the performance will be streamed live on Google+ and YouTube.
