California (SID): California-Denver Postgame Notes

Nov. 16, 2012

DENVER -

With the 72-61 victory over Denver on the road, California opened the season 3-0 for the third-straight season and the fourth overall under fifth-year head coach Mike Montgomery.

The 11-point victory against the Pioneers marked the second-straight season the Bears have won their first three games by a double-digit margin.

Cal had five players (Allen Crabbe-20, Justin Cobbs-17, David Kravish-11, Robert Thurman-10, Ricky Kreklow-10) reach double figures in the scoring column for the first time since March 8, 2012 when the Bears defeated Stanford in their first game in the Pac-12 Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. In that game, Jorge Gutierrez led the way with 22 points, Harper Kamp had 17, Cobbs recorded 15, Crabbe had 11 and Kravish netted 10.

As a team, Cal shot 73.7 percent in the second half, converting 14-of-19 shots in the second period.

Cal has out-rebounded each of its first three opponents, including a +12 (40-28) advantage against Denver.

The victory in Denver improved Cal's record to 4-1 in road openers (does not include neutral site games) under head coach Mike Montgomery.

The Bears made 20 free throws (20-of-25) in the Denver contest, the most since they converted 21 free throws against Stanford on March 8, 2012. Crabbe was a perfect 6-of-6 in the contest and has converted 16-of-17 free throws on the season, while Justin Cobbs has connected on 11-of-12 free throw attempts on the year.

Junior Allen Crabbe became the 42nd player in school history to reach the 1,000-point milestone for his Golden Bear career. He hit the four-digit total with a three-pointer at the 9:34 mark of the second half and now has 1,010 career points. Crabbe achieved the milestone in his 68th career game, which is 19 games less than it took Cal's all-time leading scorer Jerome Randle (1,835) to reach the 1,000-point mark.

Crabbe scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half. He has scored 17 or more points in a single half in all three games this season. The junior posted 20 points in the first half against CSU Bakersfield and 24 points in the second half of the Pepperdine contest.

With 20 points against Denver, Crabbe has scored 20 or more points in at least three-straight games for the second time in his career. He opened the 2012-13 season with 27 points against CSU Bakersfield and a career-best 33 points against Pepperdine earlier this week. The guard recorded four-straight games of 20 or more points during his freshman season, pouring in 26 at Oregon State, 24 vs. Stanford, 21 against USC, and 20 vs. Mississippi in consecutive games.

Crabbe and fellow junior guard Justin Cobbs combined for 37 of Cal's 72 points against Denver and have combined for 142 of the team's 229 points through the season's first three games.

Sophomore David Kravish recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds against the Pioneers. The totals were six shy of his career-high in both categories.

Senior Robert Thurman recorded 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting in 19 minutes of action on Friday night.
