Sony Claims Consumers Don't Want Lower PS3 Prices

Yahoo! has posted an article on Sony's explanation for not cutting PS3 Prices.

Quote:

The electronics giant says it doesn't plan to make any pricing changes -- even to the now technologically inferior 160 GB model -- since it believes customers are tired of having to choose between differently priced systems.

"There's no price drop formally, but the thing that's been happening in the market over the last year or so is that there's been so many retail price promotions, and so many different gift card offers and all those things, being done by all of us (Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony), that we've heard from our consumer, 'Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value,'" said John Koller, Sony Computer Entertainment America's VP of marketing, handhelds and home consoles, in an interview with Engadget.

Even in an industry where PR spin can put a nice shine on the lousiest news, a company arguing that customers don't want lower prices is hard to swallow.

How do some of these people have jobs? Consumers don't want lower prices? That's a big fucking piece of garbage. Consumers ALWAYS want lower prices.

I was only joking when I said in a previous post that Sony would fart out another $600 playstation. But, I guess Sony has spoken. The next playstation will be $600.

In related news, Sony has stated in a press release that they don't actually want my money.

Nothing in that statement said "consumers don't want lower prices." Did anyone here actually read it? He said (paraphrasing) consumers are tired of convoluted pricing schemes -- which is true. Just look at the bullshit that has been going on lately with all the different versions of games (i'm looking at you AC3 and Dishonored) and retailer exclusives. Its absolutely stupid to have to look at different stores and the gift card refunds, and other deals they use to try to get people in the door, as well as 4 different models of a goddamn console, just to figure out where to buy it and which one to buy. If anyone actually read what was said, the guy is completely correct.

How Yahoo and the people here read that and got "customers don't want price drops" is beyond me. None of this is meant to defend Sony -- i think they're insane for not going with a price drop for the holidays to compete with MS and Nintendo, but that's another issue entirely.

Sony, please stop talking to the press. All you do is make an ass of yourself. The new release at the same price rubbed EVERYONE the wrong way.

Congrats on being the only person who understood this while reading the article. The problem is that now everyone is reporting the Yahoo story, not the Sony press release.

Yes, but he's using that as a defense to not dropping the price on now obsolete hardware. Which makes no sense. Yes, consumers don't like mail in rebates, gift card promotions, and game bundle promotions. They just want the thing they want at the cheapest price the retailer is willing to sell it for.

What does any of that have to do with consumers not wanting the price of "last years model" to drop? Nothing, so the only logical conclusion someone can draw is that he's using the consumers aversion to convoluted price drop schemes to draw the conclusion that it's the price drops they don't like, not the convoluted-ness of it all.

It wasn't a press release, it was an engadget interview. I'd like to congratulate myself for understanding that while reading the article.

I LOVE Sony. I have a Sony TV, a Sony receiver, a Sony camera, a Sony camcorder, a Sony alarm clock, a PS3, a PS2, a Vita, a PSP, and even an ancient Sony Walkman.

But "enough will all these weird prices moves", is the DUMBEST, most BS thing I've ever heard any corporate person say.

Yahoo News is the most disingenuous source out there. I would rather get my daily news from an ACLU representative and the High Wizard of the Klu Klux Klan. At least then the articles would have a chance to be well written.

This reminds me of when Disney first changed their dining plan.

Some people complained it was too much food and some complained that they wish they had a way to adjust the tip based upon service.

So, what did Disney do? They made a big deal of the few complaints and they annouced that they would remove the appetizer and no longer included the gratuity. But they would reduce the price to off set this.

So, how much did Disney eventually reduce the price? $1. Thats right $1 from $40/adult/day to $39/adult/day. They took away around $20 of value and reduced it $1, not to make more money, but according to them, to accede to the wishes of their customers.

There was a lot more outcry about the removal of gratuity then there ever was about too much food or controlling the tip amount, but for some reason they ignored it this time.

So, to sum it up, they used a BS excuse about lisiting to their customers to foist a 47% increase in the cost on those same customers. And they did it with a smile!

I read the interview, and I personally believe it does. While it doesn't directly say "consumers don't want lower prices", that is exactly what he is getting at.

Quote:

There's no price drop formally ... we've heard from our consumer, 'Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value,'
Right there he claims that consumers don't want the price to move. And he is saying it to defend not dropping the price of the older units. Ergo, he is saying consumers don't want a lower price on the PS3.

Sony: Hmm, should we make the old PS3 units cheaper?
Consumer: ENOUGH WITH THE FREAKING PRICE MOVES!
Sony: You spoke, and we listened! We will leave them at the currently overpriced point!

Brilliant.

The weird thing is that I hated Sony with a passion until 2007.
