Unable to send private messages?

I did indeed check the FAQs but none of the available answers applied to my situation. Since I joined I haven't been able to reply to private messages that are coming into me, or compose new ones. When I press the 'compose message' button, I get 'no new messages' instead of a compose page. Chat works just fine.
