Boeing 777 crashes while landing at San Francisco airport; 2 dead; scores injured
The fiery crash landing of a Korean jetliner at the San Francisco International Airport late Saturday morning has left at least two people dead, and up to 70 injured, according to NBC Bay Area station KNTV. Hospitals say some of the injured are critical. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

A Boeing 777 jetliner with 307 people on board crashed and caught fire at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday after a flight across the Pacific Ocean from South Korea. Two people were killed and scores injured, authorities said.
The plane, Asiana Airlines Flight 214 from Seoul, apparently hit the lip of the seawall that separates the runway from San Francisco Bay, sources told NBC News, then slammed into the ground and skidded down the runway before coming to rest in an adjacent field, its tail sheared off and the fuselage spewing black smoke. Photos and video from the scene showed passengers sliding down the emergency chutes and walking away.
Despite the deaths and scores of injuries -- many of them serious -- San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee said at a evening news conference that "This could have been much worse."
Federal investigators said it was too early to determine a cause.?A representative of the National Transportation Safety Board arrived on scene late Saturday and took control of the investigation.
The sources who spoke with NBC News said the pilot did not make a distress call before landing. The plane crashed in favorable weather ? partly cloudy skies and light wind.
Joanne Hayes-White, the San Francisco fire chief, said there were 307 people on board ? 291 passengers and 16 crew -- and all had been accounted for. Authorities said 182 people were taken to one of nine Bay Area hospitals, including 49 with serious injuries. Hospitals reported that the injuries included burns and fractures.
San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee thanks the first responders of the Asiana Airlines crash and says "this could have been much worse."
She said first-responders who arrived at the jet saw a handful of survivors emerging from the bay.
?We did observe some of the passengers coming out of the water. But the plane certainly was not in the water. There was a fire on the plane, so the assumption might be that they went near the water?s edge which is very shallow to maybe douse themselves with water.?
The bodies of the two people who were killed were found on the runway, according to Hayes-White.
South Korea's transport ministry said the two who died were Chinese citizens.
Benjamin Levy, who was on the plane, described hearing a lot of screaming after the landing. He told NBC Bay Area that he also saw many head injuries, but that most of the passengers appeared to make it off the plane safely. Fire crews sprayed water and retardant foam to douse the flames.
?We were approaching perfectly well, but we were too low,? he said. ?When the pilot realized it, he put some more gas to correct it, but it was too late, so we hit the runway pretty bad, and we started going up in the air again, and we landed pretty hard.?

Stefanie Turner, a witness, told MSNBC that she saw the plane clip the runway with its tail, then come to rest with flames and smoke billowing from the fuselage.
?The tail was too low. Instead of coming in flat it was coming in at, I would say, maybe a 45-degree angle, with the tail far too low,? she said. ?It really went through quite a few acrobatics on the runway.?
Besides the 61 Americans, the airline said the jet carried 77 Koreans, 141 Chinese, three passengers from India, one each from Japan and Vietnam and seven whose nationalities were unknown.?
The crash ? the first involving a jumbo jet in the United States in more than a decade ? happened at 11:27 a.m. local time. It left a field of debris down the runway, beginning at the seawall that divides the runway from San Francisco Bay. Pieces of the tail could be seen among the wreckage.
An air traffic control recording captured a controller saying: ?Emergency vehicles are responding. We have everyone on the way.?
David Eun, an executive with Samsung Electronics who was on the flight, posted to his Twitter account: ?I just crash landed at SFO. Tail ripped off. Most everyone seems fine. I?m ok.? He also posted a photo that showed people walking or running away from the downed plane, including at least a half-dozen who appeared to have slid down an emergency chute.
Eun previously worked at Google and AOL. Sheryl Sandberg, a friend of his and the chief operating officer of Facebook, said that she was supposed to be on Asiana 214 with family and colleagues but that they switched to a different airline to use frequent-flier miles.
The airline said on Twitter that it was investigating and would have news as soon as possible. It offered thoughts and prayers for the passengers and crew.
The deaths are the first in an accident involving a 777, a wide-body, twin-engine jet that has been in service since 1995 and is known as the Triple-7. Before Saturday, the most serious 777 accident was in January 2008, when a British Airways flight landed short and skidded onto the runway, injuring 47 people. The jet in Saturday?s crash had been in service since 2006.
San Francisco International suspended all takeoffs and landings for four hours after the crash and said that some flights were being diverted. Two of its four runways later reopened. The airport advised passengers to check with their airlines.
President Barack Obama, at the Camp David retreat in Maryland, was made aware of the crash and was in touch with federal, state and local authorities, a White House official said.
The last crash of a jumbo jet in the United States was in November 2001, when American Airlines Flight 587, an Airbus A300-600 airliner,?crashed in a New York neighborhood. The last fatal crash of any commercial plane in the U.S. was in February 2009, when a Continental Airlines regional flight crashed into a house near Buffalo, N.Y., killing 49 people.
The flight tracking service FlightAware said that Asiana 214 flew about 10 and a half hours after taking off from Incheon airport at 5:04 p.m. local time, about half an hour late. The flight had originated in Shanghai, China.
The service identified the model as a Boeing 777-200, which has a wingspan of almost 200 feet and can carry as many as 440 people. The manufacturing company Pratt & Whitney said the plane was powered by its PW4000 engines.
Federal sources told NBC News that there was no indication of terrorism. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a full team to San Francisco. Boeing said it was gathering information.
?Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today?s incident at SFO,? Boeing said on its Twitter account. ?We stand ready to assist the NTSB.?

The effects were so decimating to loyal employees vested in their employers? retirement plans and public investors, the Federal Government responded with legislation the following year, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). Originally intended to protect employees and retail investors from cutting-edge white-collar crime, SOX placed onerous requirements on public companies — so onerous, in fact, it has effectively encouraged some of the most high-growth private corporations founded after SOX to remain private much longer, to tap secondary markets to access liquidity, and to file IPO papers after company insiders and private investors reaped the rewards. The result can be seen most recently in the Bay Area, where reports surfaced this week suggesting Facebook?s IPO was mostly responsible for catapulting San Mateo County past Manhattan in terms of wealth, and as I?ll try to argue, might be indirectly responsible for the rising house prices, increased traffic, transit strikes, and bespoke apps Bay Area residents enjoy today. The rent is, indeed, too damn high. Let me state upfront that I am not blaming Facebook, insiders, or investors. In fact, all actors acted rationally within their rights. Facebook is just one shining example of a trend where the technology sector is the real growth-sector of an American economy which has barely withstood two separate economic recessions within a few years of each other. As a result of money flowing into private technology equities and combined with the restrictions imposed by SOX, new technology companies have enjoyed more access to private capital and have thus been able to remain private longer. While SOX was originally designed to protect the public from ?the next Enron,? the unintended consequences of such restrictive legislation dampened the appetite of private shareholders and investors to tap public markets too soon. Unfortunately, one of the most harmful consequences of SOX can be seen through the story of Facebook?s IPO and the wealth that it generated — mostly residing in San Mateo County. When wealth is created but concentrated in certain ZIP codes, both local areas and the nation?s economy is affected. It all has a cascading effect. With more wealth locked into San Mateo and surrounding counties, the demand for assets rises quickly. House prices skyrocket. From solemn to spectacular, July 4th celebrated
NEW YORK (AP) ? From solemn to spectacular, the nation marked its independence with the reopening of the Statue of Liberty for the first time since Superstorm Sandy, extravagant fireworks that including a 19-burst salute to Arizona's fallen firefighters, and a musical tribute in Washington to those affected by the Boston Marathon bombing.
"I always love July Fourth and I'm very happy to be in this country, I know I'm blessed," said 15-year-old Yoana Lorenzo, who was among the millions who watched the New York City's over-the-top Fourth of July Fireworks show Thursday night. "To see all these people come together and celebrate, it's pretty great."
Four barges carrying 40,000 shells on the Hudson River unleashed a barrage of brilliant reds, whites and blues ? some unleashed in shapes and smiley faces ? as spectators marveled at the famed New York fireworks display, snapping videos and pictures on their cellphones.
Earlier Thursday, hundreds lined up to be among the first to board boats destined for Lady Liberty, which opened for the first time since it was shuttered by Sandy. Among them was New Yorker Heather Leykam ? whose mother's home was destroyed during the storm.
"This, to us, Liberty Island, is really about a rebirth," said Leykam, who was with her family. "It is a sense of renewal for the city and the country. We wouldn't have missed it for the world."
In Prescott, Ariz., celebrations were a more subdued.
A fire chief read the names of the 19 firefighters killed last weekend battling a wildfire, while 19 single fireworks burst overhead.
"Less than 100 hours ago, the city of Prescott, the state of Arizona and the nation lost 19 of the best, the bravest firefighters ever dispatched into the forest," fire department division chief Don Devendorf said.
The commemorative starbursts were followed by a raucous 20-minute display choreographed to patriotic pop songs, which drew cheering, grins and shouts of "America!"
Also 19 candles burned beneath red, white and blue bunting, at Bistro St. Michael on Whiskey Row in the old West town ? one for each firefighter.
In California, more than two dozen people were injured when fireworks malfunctioned at a large community park in Simi Valley. Officials say 20 people were taken to hospitals with minor to moderate injuries, and another eight were treated at the park. A bomb squad was at the park to deactivate the remainder of the fireworks.
In Washington, thousands gathered on the National Mall to ring in the Fourth of July with fireworks and music. Neil Diamond sang "Sweet Caroline" in tribute to victims and survivors of April's Boston Marathon bombing. The song is a Fenway Park tradition, and Diamond performed it there in the aftermath of the attack.
Boston hosted its first large gathering since the marathon bombing that killed three and injured hundreds. While attendance for the city's celebration appeared to be down early, it increased as the start of the festivities approached. Crowds on the Charles River Esplanade seeming smaller than in recent years, while a robust law enforcement presence greeted revelers gathering for a performance by the Boston Pops and a fireworks display.
Among those at Boston's festivities was Carlos Arredondo, the cowboy hat-wearing marathon attendee who became part of one of the indelible images of the bombings' aftermath: helping rush a badly wounded man from the scene in a wheelchair, his legs torn to pieces.
Arredondo said the July 4 celebration ? an event authorities believe the bombing suspects initially planned to target ? is an important milestone in the healing process, not just for him but also those who were stopping to tell him their own stories of that day.
"I think there's no better place to be," said Arredondo, wearing his cowboy hat and a "Boston Strong" shirt in the marathon's blue and yellow colors.
Speaking at the reopening of Lady Liberty, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell choked up as she told the crowd she was wearing a purple ribbon in memory of the fallen firefighters.
"Nineteen firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty, and we as a nation stand together," she said through tears.
The island was decorated with star-spangled bunting, but portions remain blocked off with large construction equipment, and the main ferry dock was boarded up. Repairs to brick walkways and docks were ongoing. But much of the work has been completed since Sandy swamped the 12-acre island in New York Harbor.
The statue itself was unharmed during the storm, but the land took a beating. Railings broke, docks and paving stones were torn up and buildings were flooded. The storm destroyed electrical systems, sewage pumps and boilers. Hundreds of National Park Service workers from as far away as California and Alaska spent weeks cleaning mud and debris.
"It is one of the most enduring icons of America, and we pulled it off ? it's open today," National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis said. "Welcome."
The statue was open for a single day last year ? Oct. 28, the day before Sandy struck. It had been closed the previous year for security upgrades. Neighboring Ellis Island remains closed and there has been no reopening date set.
Nationwide, Philadelphia, Washington and New Orleans hosted large holiday concerts. A Civil War reenactment commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg drew as many as 40,000 people to Pennsylvania.
Also in New York, throngs of revelers packed Brooklyn's Coney Island to see competitive eating champ Joey Chestnut scarf down 69 hot dogs to break a world record and win the title for a seventh year at the 98th annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Sonya Thomas defended her title with nearly 37 dogs.
In his weekly radio address from Washington, President Barack Obama urged Americans to work to secure liberty and opportunity for their own children and future generations. The first family hosted U.S. servicemen and women at the White House for a barbeque.
Atlanta and Alaska held holiday runs ? thousands were racing up a 3,022-foot peak in Seward. In New Orleans, the Essence Festival celebrating black culture and music kicked off along the riverfront.
The celebratory mood turned somber in Oklahoma and Maine with fatal accidents during parades. In Edmond, Okla., a boy died after being run over by a float near the end of the town's LibertyFest parade. In Bangor, Maine, the driver of a tractor in the parade was killed after the vehicle was struck by an old fire truck.
Not everyone was welcoming the masses ? Hermosa Beach, Calif., was ramping up police patrols after years of drunken and raucous behavior from revelers. Hartford, Conn., postponed fireworks because the Connecticut River was too high.
Anti-surveillance protests cropped up in a number of cities on Independence Day, with activists speaking out against recent disclosures that the National Security Agency has been secretly logging people's phone calls and Internet activity. In Philadelphia, more than 100 people marched downtown to voice their displeasure, chanting, "NSA, go away!"
But in Union Beach, N.J., which was destroyed by Sandy, residents had something to celebrate. The working-class town won a party and fireworks contest from the television station Destination America and USA Weekend magazine.
"It's wonderful. Everyone's been so depressed," said Mary Chepulis as she watched a local band perform on a stage that stood where the home next to hers had been.

Gabby Giffords meets with George H.W. Bush
KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) ? Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords has met with former President George H.W. Bush during her national tour to push for gun control.
Giffords and her husband, former Navy pilot and astronaut Mark Kelly, visited the former Republican president at his Kennebunkport estate on Saturday. Former first lady Barbara Bush also attended the lunch meeting.
Kelly, who previously lived in Texas, is a personal acquaintance of the Bush family.
Giffords, severely injured during a 2011 assassination attempt, has become the face of the campaign to expand background checks on gun purchases, which is opposed by the National Rifle Association.
Bush, 89, resigned from the NRA in 1995, citing its response to the Oklahoma City bombing.
Giffords and Kelly head to North Carolina on Sunday to finish their tour.
